Damage pegged at $50,000 after Balaclava St. garage fire

The Amherstburg Fire Department is estimating the damage at $50,000 following a garage fire on Balaclava St.

Fire crews were on hand for almost two hours at the scene of the fire, located at 51 Balaclava. According to the fire department’s Twitter account, the fire was declared out around 8:40 p.m. though firefighters remained on scene for a bit longer to check for hot spots.

The damage estimate encompasses both the building and its contents. There were no injuries.

An improperly discarded cigarette is being listed by the fire department as the cause of the blaze.
