Tito DeLuca planted his tomatoes late this year but the harvest turned out to be more than he could have anticipated.

The Concession 2 North resident has a larger than usual crop of tomatoes this year, the biggest of which is one DeLuca weighed as being 2-1/2 pounds. He said he planted his tomatoes three or four weeks later than usual this year – around early June – and said he did “nothing at all” special as his garden grew over the summer.

The Sicilian tomato is the largest DeLuca said he has grown. He recalls one and two pound tomatoes a few years ago “but nothing this big.”

DeLuca said he had other large tomatoes in his garden but they weren’t quite as big as his 2-1/2 pounder. It will be a short-term keepsake before he eats it.

“I’m going to keep it just to show a few friends,” he said.
