The Big Creek Hockey League is ongoing with its president stating there is a lot of interest in it from players.

Andrew Braithwaite said there is just fewer than 100 players in the 19-and-under hockey league with roughly 12-15 per team in the six-team league. The league consists of teams that include Amherstburg Flowers & Gifts, Big Creek Farms, Coulson Design-Build, Dan Kane Chev, Re/Max (John D’Alimonte) and Titan Tree Care.

“We’re slightly over capacity with 25 or so on a spare list waiting to get a full-time spot,” said Braithwaite. “We’re still getting names and numbers.”

The league’s popularity can be attributed to the level of play, Braithwaite believed, as many players in Amherstburg and surrounding areas have heard the league’s competitiveness and skill level has increased in recent years.

“We’ve kind of brought it up to modern standards in the last few years,” said Braithwaite. “

A Sunday men’s league in LaSalle also folded, he added, with players coming over from there.

“We ended up getting flooded with guys trying to find some ice,” said Braithwaite. “Guys are out here to win. It’s a lot faster, younger and higher skilled.”

The Big Creek Hockey League plays every Wednesday night at the United Communities Credit Union Complex. For more information on the league, visit
