Bantam Major Stars to face Slovakian team in exhibition bout in the new year

The Amherstburg Bantam Major Stars hockey team will be getting a little something extra for Christmas this year.

On Jan 2, the Bantam Stars will host an exhibition game against Slovakian team at the United Communities Credit Union Complex at 6 p.m.

Between Christmas and New Years the Bantam Stars will be participating in the Riverside International Tournament which will feature teams from the United States.

Upon learning that the Slovakian team will be staying in Canada a few more day after the tournament is concluded, Bantam Stars head coach Joe Shaw said a exhibition game was schedule.

“They wanted to have a game with us so we said sure, let’s bring them to our arena and have a game,” said Shaw. “You don’t get a chance to play international teams very often.”

Shaw said this is a great opportunity from his team because teams usually at the “A” level do not get the chance to international teams.

The Bantam Stars coach said he notified his players of the game last week after one of their games and described his players as “very excited” to take part in this international friendly.

“It doesn’t happen very often,” said Shaw. “It will be a great experience for our guys to see how they measure up with guys their own age and level from Europe. Instead of a grueling practice we’ll have a fun exhibition game.”

The Bantam Major Stars currently sit third in the Bluewater League with a record of 13-7-0 for 26 points with 71 goals for and 44 goals against. They are ranked sixth out of 95 teams in Ontario, according to the latest OMHA rankings.

Shaw admits he’s not sure what to expect from the Slovakian team however the one thing he does know is that  their international competition will get 100 per cent effort from the Bantam Stars.

“They will give it all they have,” said Shaw. “I think we will do well against them, our team has a little bit of everything. They have played well all year and I’m really happy about that.”
