The Amherstburg Stars atom major team held an elite-8 tournament on the weekend and named it after a parent who passed away recently.

The tournament was held last Friday through Sunday at the United Communities Credit Union Complex in memory of Brandy Peddie, who died Oct. 2 at the age of 36.

“It’s in honour of Brandy,” said Paul Tonietto, vice president of travel with the Amherstburg Minor Hockey Association (AMHA). “She was a devoted Amherstburg Minor Hockey volunteer and hockey mom.”

Peddie is the mother of Jake Peddie, the team captain.

The idea for the tournament came from coach Dennis Emerson, said Tonietto, who wanted to make it an invitational tournament and send invitations to teams ranked in the OMHA’s top 20 from last year’s atom minor season. It ended up with Amherstburg being joined by teams from Oakville, Orillia, Napanee, Erie North Shore, Riverside, Port Perry and Burlington.

Other AMHA teams were able to be booked out-of-town giving the atom major tournament the complex for the weekend, noted Tonietto.

Tonietto added the tournament gives the top OMHA teams a chance to see each other prior to competing against each other in playdowns.
