Amherstburg firefighters extinguished a fire in a Howard Ave. barn Monday night that resulted in no injuries but roughly $3,000 damage.

Firefighters from Station 3 attended the fire in the 8400 block of Howard Ave. and quickly put the fire out and ventilated the structure. The Amherstburg Fire Department states the barn is used to house chickens. None of the approximately 150 chickens that were in the barn at the time were harmed, the fire department added.

An electric coil wrapped around water pipes to prevent freezing ignited hay near the coil, fire officials say. Fire damage was confined to a “small area in barn.”
