Students and staff at Anderdon Public School marked their own recreation of Quebec’s winter carnival by hosting a “Carnivale” of their own.

“Today is Anderdon’s first celebration of the winter carnival that comes from Quebec,” explained Deanne Gigliotti, one of the school’s two French teachers and co-founders of Friday’s event.

Gigliotti said 13 activities were spread throughout the building and ranged from indoor tobogganing to games in the gym to other winter carnival-themed activities. Bonhomme, the mascot of the Quebec winter carnival, was also recreated at the Anderdon Public festival.

“For the whole day, it’s a cultural celebration,” she said.

The event was primarily geared for Grade 1-8 students although JK and SK students received a visit from Bonhomme during the day. Gigliotti pointed out Grade 7 students helped lead teams to the various activities while Grade 8 students assisted by acting as “ambassadors” for the day.

“Our parent council was phenomenal,” said Gigliotti. “They helped us sponsor the event.”

Organizers are hoping this is not just a one-time event for Anderdon Public School.

“I would love for it to be an annual thing,” said Gigliotti.
