A pair of area service clubs are asking people if they are “brave enough to take the plunge?”

If so, the Amherstburg Optimist Club and the Harrow Kinsmen have the perfect event for them.

The 11th annual polar bear dip is coming Dec. 7, with the dip to occur off the frigid beach in Colchester with other festivities taking place at the Shooter’s Roadhouse location in Harrow.

Proceeds will be split between the two service organizations with the Harrow Kinsmen putting their proceeds to community projects in their town while the Amherstburg Optimist Club will help local families in need at Christmas.
Optimist Club president Brandon Renaud said their club will use the money for their annual Christmas gift giving program.

There was a total of $3,000 raised at last year’s polar bear dip, Renaud stated. He added the amount of families the Optimist Club can sponsor depends on how many donations they receive.

“We sponsor as many families as we can during the Christmas season,” said Renaud.

The Amherstburg Optimist Club only helped one family last year, but Renaud pointed out they “went over the top” in helping that family.

This year’s polar bear dip sees registration begin at 11 a.m. with the actual jump into Lake Erie occurring at 3 p.m. There will be a free chili buffet for jumpers. The day will also feature a dunk tank, hot tub to warm up, a costume contest, raffles and door prizes.

Pledge forms are available at the Shooter’s locations in both Amherstburg and Harrow.
