The University of Windsor won the CIBA National University baseball championship in Amherstburg Sunday night with local natives being amongst the winners.

Zack Breault of Amherstburg outdueled Brandon Berkovits of Concordia on the mound while Mike Ferrato’s game-winning sacrifice fly in the bottom of the ninth provided the only run in Windsor’s 1-0 title win at the United Communities Credit Union Complex.

Breault said he has gone to school down south and didn’t win so it was nice to win as a student athlete in Canada. He said he has won as an amateur and as a professional so it was nice to win it as a university student.

“Doing it as a student athlete is pretty cool,” said Breault. “It’s not easy to balance both.”

Breault pitched out of some jams, including allowing a leadoff double in the seventh inning, but was able to pitch out of them.

“You’ve got to rely on the guys behind you to make plays and do the brunt work yourself,” said Breault. “I’m glad we came out of it on top.”

Winning the national title at home was also a good experience for him.

“It’s pretty cool,” he said. “I’m only two blocks away.”
Breault said the team is tight-knit and credited coach Frank Jeney for his efforts in working with the team throughout the season.

“The group of guys is outstanding,” said Breault. “We really came together as a family.”

Amherstburg’s Jeff Parker was ecstatic with the win.

“It’s probably the best feeling I’ve ever had in baseball,” he said. “I’ve been working for this for four years. It couldn’t have wound up any better.”

Winning the title at home was equally nice for Parker, noting he was able to come home at night and sleep in his own bed all the while competing for a national championship.

“This is on top for sure,” Parker said of his baseball accomplishments.

Parker added the mood in the bullpen, where he was, was “pretty intense” but was glad to run on the field with his teammates once the ball game was over and the Lancers and won the title.
