Amherstburg host girls 39-team softball tournament

Amherstburg was tournament central this past weekend as they hosted the Essex County Interlock Girls Softball tournament.

A combined 39 teams in Intermediate, Junior and seniors from all over Essex County participated in the weekend tournament with games being played at Centennial Park, Bill Wigle Park and Malden Central.

The tournament feature seven local teams in the three divisions.

The intermediate division feature 15 teams, while the junior and seniors divisions each had 12 teams.

The weekend tournament, which is usually held in Leamington, moved to Amherstburg for the first time.

“They had a lot of complaints out there (Leamington) so we put in for it and we got it,” said Amherstburg Minor League Baseball president Wayne Vigneux. “Everything has been great.”

Tournament convener Mary Lippert, who was also coaching her team said despite the heat and the rain the tournament, was running smoothly, but also admitted there are some issues that need to be ironed out for next year.

“The tournament has been excellent, a little bit of bad weather early in the day (Saturday) but other than that it’s been great,” said Lippert.

Lippert said most of the games and been very competitive and close, which makes for an exciting tournament.

“The only bad thing was in the first round when two Amherstburg teams played each other, so one of us had to lose,” she joked.

Tournament results are as followed:

Jr Girls “A” Pool:  Harrow Home Health vs. Grant, Schiefer and Sudds (Leamington)  Harrow Home Heath won the game 14-2.

Jr Girls “B” Pool: Harrow Naples vs. Jose’s Noodle Factory (Leamington) Harrow Naples won the game 21-14.

Int Girls “A” Pool   DPM Insurance (Harrow) vs. South Point Ford Mustangs (Leamington) DPM Insurance won the game 13-11.

Int Girls “B” Pool: South Point Ford Explorers (Leamington) vs. Jose’s Noodle Factory ( Leamington) South Point Ford Explorers won the game 7-3.

Sr Girls “A” Pool: Shoppers Drug Mart (Kingsville) vs. State Farm (Essex) Shoppers Drug Mart won the game 14-9.

Sr Girls “B” Pool: Goggin Mold (Amherstburg) vs. Laser Art (Harrow) Laser Art won the game 10-6.
