Amherstburg girls lead Wildcats to a provincial championship

Four girls from Amherstburg – Lexi Dodds, Savannah Prescott, Emma Marshall and Lexi DiCarlo – led the Windsor Wildcats 9U Mite fast-pitch softball team to a provincial championship.

The championships were held in Chatham and included 9-year-old girls’ teams from all across Ontario. Savannah Prescott was the number one pitcher throughout the year and showed her best work on the mound when it came to the provincial tournament. Lexi Dodds was the starting shortstop and number two pitcher. Both of these girls shut down the opposition all weekend as the Wildcats out scored their opponents 60-7 in the tournament.

The Wildcats started off by beating the host team Chatham 18-3, then they dismantled the tournament favourite Guelph with a 16-0 whitewash. Next up to play in the semifinals was Kitchener, not a problem as the girls won 16-1.

In the championship game, the Wildcats played a strong Turtle Club team from LaSalle. These two Essex County powerhouse teams battled, with the Wildcats winning 10-3. Emma Marshall shined behind the plate and at first base defensively all tournament. Lexi DiCarlo made one outstanding play after another at any position she played at all weekend. DiCarlo saved her best play for last as she ran down a high fly ball to make the last out to give her team the championship.

Dodds batted lead off all year and led the team in batting with a .508 average. Prescott, the team’s power hitter, tore the cover off of the ball leading the team in RBI’s with 32. Marshall played catcher all summer long and did a great job handling the team’s pitching staff. Emma showed off her strong arm when she threw out a LaSalle runner trying to steal second base at a critical point in the championship game. DiCarlo played second base like a pro and came up with big defensive plays all year. Her speed on the base paths was amazing. When she got on first, she’d steal second and third base and if the other team wasn’t careful she’d steal home in the blink of an eye.

The future looks bright for these Amherstburg girls, as they have many years of fast-pitch softball ahead of them. Congratulations to the entire Wildcats team on a great season and to these four girls, that’s the way to represent Amherstburg.
