Amherst splits two games on the court last week

The General Amherst Bulldogs won one and lost one in WECSSAA Tier 2 senior boys basketball action last week.

The Bulldogs (4-1) lost their first game of the year Thursday afternoon, a 51-48 defeat at the hands of the visiting Brennan Cardinals. Macaul Reiner scored 32 of his team’s 48 points but said it was a frustrating night offensively for the team.

“The intensity wasn’t really great on offense,” said Reiner. “We didn’t hit open guys.”

Reiner said the Bulldogs were expecting a tough game from Brennan, but “we weren’t ready for it, I guess.” He believed if they had done some “little things” better, they probably would have won the game.

Coach Greg Scott said the Bulldogs still have to find a way to put it all together.

“We definitely have all of the components of being a successful team,” said Scott. “We need to understand what needs to be done in all situations.”

Scott believed the loss to Brennan could be a learning experience for the Bulldogs, particularly in what they need to do better down the stretch.

“We definitely have to work on team defense,” said Scott.

If all five players on the court worked hard and played good defense, Scott said they would be a tough defensive team to beat. He added they weren’t crisp on offense against the Cardinals as well.

The Bulldogs had a better result last Tuesday afternoon against the Essex Red Raiders. The game, also played at General Amherst saw the Bulldogs come away with a 66-35 victory. Reiner had 20 in the victory while Jeremy Cota had 12 points. Darius Wilson scored 11 while Elijah Porter had nine points.

The Bulldogs return from the Christmas break with a tough game at Lajeunesse Jan. 7. They will also compete in a tournament at Massey the following weekend.
