Last year, the junior Generals football team defeated the Sandwich Sabres 54-0. This year, Sandwich rebounded to defeat the Generals 41-14.

The score does not reflect the effort of the underdog Generals. Things looked very good in the first quarter as Mitch Wright ran 54 yards for a touchdown that gave Amherst an early 6-0 lead. Shortly thereafter, the Generals made it 14-0 as Shayne Purdie hit Clayton Andrews for an eight-yard touchdown. The two connected for a two-point conversion as well.

The Generals were driving for their third touchdown from the Sandwich 15-yard line but on first down, the Generals fumbled and Sandwich ran it back 80 yards to cut the lead to 14-7.

Lack of depth and key injuries were the downfall of Amherst as Sandwich racked up 34 more points by game’s end.

The junior General next test is at St. Joseph next Tuesday afternoon.
