Polish up your clubs, stock up your golf balls and get ready to tee off Amherstburg.

The Amherstburg Chamber of Commerce (ACOC) is looking for golfers for their first annual Canadian Tire Amherstburg Golf Classic Texas Scramble at Pointe West Golf Club.

The ACOC’s shotgun style golf tournament hits the links Thursday, August 22 at tentative tee off time scheduled for noon and registration beginning at 10 a.m. Golfers can register a foursome for $600 or a single golfer for $175. Registration can be one of two ways, visiting to download and print out the registration forms and return them to ACOC office at the Gordon House or fill out the form online.

The tournament will also feature a number of contests such as longest, shortest and straightest drive, closest to the pin, chipping and putting contest. Prizes will even be given to golfers who sink it in the drink or whacking your ball off trees. ACOC general manager Lena Lazanja said the prize giveaways are all thanks to the “overwhelming support” she is receiving from the community.

“The response has been absolutely positive,” she said. “Everything from the sponsors that have come forward to the prizes. They are a plethora of items to be won, I’ve never played golf but this is making me want to play.”

After everyone finishes their round, they will be treated to a prime rib dinner provided by Pointe West. There will also be a number of items available for silent auction and a live auction will also take place. With prizes to be won on every hole and four chances to win a car by nailing a hole-in-one, tournament organizer Jeff Levy stresses every penny made is going back into the Amherstburg community.

Portions of the proceeds will be donated to the Jumpstart program, the A.M.A Sportsmen’s Club and the ACOC to help fund community events such as the River Lights Winter Festival.

“Every single dollar we raise will be injected back into Amherstburg,” stated Levy.

Levy mentioned he hopes to raise $5,000 for the Jumpstart program. If the goal is met, Canadian Tire will double match the first $1,000 and match the remaining $4,000. With playing on a quality golf course such as Pointe West, Lazanja and Levy hope this event becomes another one of Amherstburg’s premiere events.

“We are all really excited and anxious,” said Levy. “It’s obviously our first tournament we have done and we want it to be exciting and successful so we can build on it and make it a marquee event in Amherstburg for the next few years.”
