A’Burg Farmers Market to open this weekend

By Joel Charron

The Amherstburg Farmers Market is back and ready for another season.

Starting Saturday, May 21, over 12 vendors featuring a number of items from fresh fruits and vegetables to homemade pies and crafts as the Amherstburg Farmers Market makes its appearance for the first time this season.

“It seems the Farmers Market has gained some popularity,” said market committee member Darrell Geiger. “Some of the vendors are coming back along with some news ones.”

The Amherstburg Farmers Market is located at the foot of Howard Avenue and County Road 20, at the little white church. The Market will run from 8:30 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. The Market will run every Saturday until October 8.

“It’s a great location, everyone knows the little white church,” said Geiger.

Along with all the vendors featuring their items a number of opening day activities will be available, such as, free kids crafts and a colouring table, free cakes and cupcakes, pony rides and a horse display by Sarah Parks and a mini jumper bouncer for kids under six.

Geiger said having the Farmers Market back shows that the area supports the local farmers.

“Fresh fruits and vegetables have become really popular,” said Geiger.  “We really want to push the whole ‘buy local’ angle. There are some farmers that have some outstanding produce.”

According to Geiger the Amherstburg Farmers Market also deals with local farmers, meaning a vendor cannot sell imported goods.

“The customers can shop with confidence knowing that it’s all local stuff,” said Geiger.

Geiger said the Amherstburg Farmers Market is still looking for vendors. He added that a vendor could sign a six-week contract if they feel that would be best for them.

“We are always recruiting vendors,” he said.
