A’Burg’s Kyle Shaw traded to Soo Greyhounds

After being traded from the Sudbury Wolves, Kyle Shaw is taking his talents to the Soo.

Shaw who has spent the last two seasons with the Sudbury Wolves was traded to the Sault St. Marie Greyhounds on June 28.

According to Shaw, the opportunity to prove himself on the ice with the Wolves became increasingly difficult as Shaw only played in 43 games over the last two years. Feeling he needed a change of scenery, Shaw asked his agent to seek a trade.

Kyle Shaw was hoping for a trade during the OHL offseason. He got his wish on June 28.

“I just wanted an opportunity anywhere,” said Shaw.

Shaw got the call from his agent that he was trade on June 28, while enjoying his free time playing Call of Duty.

Shaw was traded for a 2012 conditional draft pick, which means the draft pick depends on the amount of games that Shaw plays with the Greyhounds.

“Both and my agent and I were trying to get this done,” said Shaw. “I didn’t think it was going to happen because it was so close to the end of the month, but I’m really happy that it did.”

The trade moves Shaw into the Western Conference, which means there will be more opportunity for his friends and family to come watch him play.

“We went to as many games as we could last year but it’s so far away in the Eastern Conference, especially when you’re driving up there in the winter,” said father Joe Shaw.

Playing in the Western Conference, Shaw will face such opponents as Windsor, London, Plymouth, Saginaw, Guelph, Kitchener and Sarnia.

“The road games are almost like home games,” said Joe.

Shaw brings an all round game to the Greyhounds.

“I’m pretty offensively skilled and I play well defensively,” said Shaw.  “I want to take my offense to the next level. I want that to be the main idea when people think of me.”

The idea of wearing a new jersey this fall is all the motivation Shaw needs to work hard this summer.

“This motivates me to work hard because I have a new first impression to make,” said Shaw.

It won’t take long for Shaw to face his old team; the Greyhounds first preseason game is against Sudbury.

“I think this trade is key for him,” said Joe. “He just needed a new venue. Sometimes putting on a new jersey changes the way things are going.”

Shaw will head up to Sault St. Marie for training camp near the end of August.

Last season the Greyhounds finished last place in the Western Conference with a 24-36-5 record.
