“Zengo” to debut at Lord Amherst this Thursday

Following in the tradition of British pubs, Lord Amherst will be debuting their own form of trivia game called Zengo.

According to Zengo creator Chris Wright, it will make its Essex County debut on Thursday, Jan 19 at 8 p.m. at Lord Amherst.

What is Zengo?

Zengo is a cross between bingo and trivial pursuit. For example, participants are given game cards with certain topics, such as movies and directors. Each game card has two playing boards with 24 squares with assorted answers on them.

Lord Amherst co-owner Anthony Mancini and Zengo creator Chris Wright show off the Zengo playing cards. Zengo will makes its Essex County debut this Thursday at 8 p.m.

The game host will call out a name, such as Martin Scorsese, and the participant must match up the name called with a movie that was done by that director.

Like bingo, the participant must successfully match up an entire line before they yell out “Zengo.” The game host will then check to see if the card is a winner, if not that game board becomes invalid and the game continues, if they win the game stops and the winner gets a prize.

“This is really a fun game,” said Lord Amherst owner Anthony Mancini. “I’m sure if my customers try it out, they will have a good time and this game will catch on.”

Mancini said he tried the more traditional trivia games last October but didn’t create enough buzz to continue.

However after Wright’s LaSalle based company Standing Room Only, who creates pub games approached Mancini about bringing Zengo to town, Mancini decided to give it a go.

“I decided to meet with them but I thought that this trivia thing wasn’t going to fly,” said Mancini. “When they introduced me to Zengo, I thought this was something that our customers would really enjoy playing.”

Mancini said one game could be played in roughly half an hour.

Lord Amherst plans to play two games a night, one at 8 p.m. and another at 9:15 p.m. for the next six to eight weeks starting this Thursday.

Wright said Lord Amherst would be the first pub in Essex County that will feature Zengo and plans to bring a film crew to Lord Amherst on Jan 19 to film a promotional video of Zengo that will be put on YouTube.

Wright said Zengo would keep people intrigued because there are a variety of topics with a variety of answers.

“It’s a semi-intelligent game that can create a fun atmosphere in a pub setting,” explained Wright.
