A local school has represented itself well at a recent hockey tournament.

St. Peter’s ACHS College School was invited to the third annual Brampton Beast Hockey Tournament and came away with the gold medal in Tier 2 of the tournament. The 12-team event was last week and featured schools from the Toronto-area with the Amherstburg-based school returning to it for the first time since they left Haliburton and located a school in town.

The team went 3-1 over the two days of last week’s tournament and avenged their only loss in the finals. St. Peter’s ACHS lost to St. Agnes earlier in the tournament but beat them 2-1 in the finals in a game that went to overtime.

St. Peter’s received their medals on the ice just prior to the Brampton Beast’s ECHL game. The Beast are one of the farm teams of the NHL’s Montreal Canadiens.

“The kids were quite excited about that,” said headmaster/coach Peter Thyrring. “This was a huge deal for them.”

The team was mainly Grade 7 and Grade 8 players but some in Grade 6 due to the small size of St. Peter’s ACHS College School. They were bolstered by the return of Cameron Sinasac, who suffered a broken leg playing in a game near Christmas.

An ACHS graduate and current Beast defenseman Reggie Traccito was helpful to the current St. Peter’s squad, including helping to coach one of the games. Thyrring said Traccito lived for three years at the school when it was located in Vaughan.

Being around a professional hockey player like Traccito was a positive experience for the current team, Thyrring added.

“The kids thought it was a unique opportunity,” he said.

St. Peter’s ACHS College School only had 11 players for the tournament but won their second major tournament in the last two years of being in Amherstburg. Thyrring was proud of how they played, adding they were back at school the next day after arriving home last Thursday at 2:40 a.m.

Because they won at the Tier 2 level this year, Thyrring pointed out they will have to play in Tier 1 next season.

A lot of people think St. Peter’s is simply a “hockey school,” but Thyrring said they only have hockey sessions once per week.

“It’s what we do with that hockey,” he said.

St. Peter’s ACHS College School welcomes boys from Amherstburg and surrounding areas to join them, he added.

“We’re the little school that could,” said Thyrring.

St. Peter’s ACHS College School is located at 6101 County Road 20 in Malden Centre. Their phone number is 519-736-2014.
