Leamington built a 7-4 lead after three innings but Amherstburg outscored them 11-2 the rest of the way.

Leamington scored six of their runs in the second inning in what the Amherstburg coaching staff said was largely the result of errors and walks, but the Cardinals had six-run inning of their own in the fourth inning. Nick Price got the ball rolling with an RBI single, soon followed by bases loaded walks to Brady Levack and Josh Sikich. Matt Bassingthwaighte had the big hit of the inning when he knocked in three more runs with a double.

Amherstburg gave themselves some insurance in the bottom of the sixth inning. The first two runs came into score that inning thanks to a dropped fly ball in right field. Cole Lepine drove home two more with a double with the fifth run of the inning being scored thanks to another error.

Cole Lepine, who had a double and a triple on the night, said he was “just seeing the ball well” and managed to drive the ball to the gap.

After the Cardinals got down in the game, Cole said his teammates didn’t stop working.

“We kept fighting and started scoring some runs,” he said. “We ended up winning big.”

Bassingthwaighte added “we were down and we battled hard.” He added he was swinging the bat well and credited his teammates for helping him with his swing.

The Cardinals had lost their first game of the season the previous Wednesday against Tecumseh U18 but that was put behind them quickly against Leamington.

“It’s good to get back in the win column,” said Bassingthwaighte.

The Cardinals play on the road Saturday against the Tecumseh Green Giants 35+ team at Cullen Field starting at 7 p.m. Their next home game is June 21 against the Woodslee senior team at 7:30 p.m.
