Teams from around the area converged on Amherstburg over the weekend thanks to a festival hosted by the Amherstburg Soccer Club.

The local soccer association hosted its third annual Essex County Soccer League (ECSL) District Festival at the Larry Bauer Soccer Complex, located adjacent to the Libro Centre. Amherstburg Soccer Club president Terry Sawchuk said it was for U8, U9 and U10 age divisions.

“It’s grown to be for both boys and girls,” said Sawchuk.

A total of 38 teams participated in the festival.

“They are from all around the county,” he said, adding that four of them were from Amherstburg.

This was the first of two tournaments the Amherstburg Soccer Club is holding this year with the second scheduled for July. Sawchuk said there are benefits for children who play in such festivals.

“It gives kids the opportunity to play more competitive games,” he said.

The Amherstburg Soccer Club continues to grow, Sawchuk continued, with nine travel teams known as the “Fusion” and 38 house league teams.

“We’ve grown quite well, which we’re happy about,” he stated.

The four teams from Amherstburg are evidence of the growth of the local soccer association. Sawchuk said they only had two teams in the ECSL festival the first year it was held in Amherstburg.

“It’s great to see and hopefully we keep building and growing the program,” said Sawchuk.

Sawchuk called it “a great weekend” and they try to make it a festival-type atmosphere with music and fun.

“We incorporate fun, festival and family,” he said.

Sawchuk added the town has been very cooperative in preparing the soccer fields.

“The town’s been great making sure the fields are lined and prepped,” he said.
